The head of the Laboratory explains that GESTAGUA leads a national project that makes it possible to anticipate outbreaks of the disease in asymptomatic patients. The possibility of detecting the COVID19 virus in wastewater is a valuable tool that can alert about the incidence of outbreaks, especially associated with asymptomatic patients. GESTAGUA, one of EMALSA's private partners, is already working at a national level on a project in this direction, the results of which can be transferred to cities such as Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, as explained by the company's Laboratory Manager, María Luisa Santana Corral. . Being able to detect the presence of the virus in wastewater implies, however, having more sophisticated laboratories from a safety point of view. Water quality The supply water of the capital of Gran Canaria is “very soft” contrary to what is mistakenly thought. The expert explained that most of the water used in the city comes from desalination and that the osmosis treatment to which it is subjected demineralizes it. In fact, after desalination, the water is mineralized again to make it suitable for consumption. María Luisa Santana Corral defended the extraordinary quality of the supply water in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, but recalled that on its journey to homes there is a section that escapes the company's quality control: the one that goes from the meters to the taps.

Along this route, the water flows through pipes, tanks, cisterns and drums, whose health depends on the community of neighbors or the owner of the building. If water is stored for a long time, if it stagnates, it loses its qualities and undergoes changes in color, smell and taste. In short, it loses its fitness for consumption. Therefore, it is advisable to maintain correct supervision and surveillance of these deposits. The Majos cultivated barley, wheat and lentils 1,600 years ago Seeds found in the Villaverde Cave, analyzed with Carbon 14, tell stories of the lives of WhatsApp Number List its ancient inhabitants. “Archaeological work has allowed us to record several moments of human occupation in the cave over a very long period of time. This archaeological potential is unique in Fuerteventura and represents an excellent opportunity for the study and knowledge of the aboriginal stage of the island,” says Rosa López, archaeologist director of Arenisca and the research. The Villaverde Cave is one of the most important sites on the island of Fuerteventura because it was inhabited by the ancient Majos for almost 800 years. Aware of the potential of the site for knowledge of the past, the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage, with the collaboration of local institutions and the Arenisca initiative. Archeology and Heritage promoted new archaeological investigations in 2018 with the aim of recovering the heritage wealth of this archaeological site.

These works were proposed from a multidisciplinary perspective with the aim of evaluating the state of conservation of the site, advancing knowledge of the archaeological context and revaluing its heritage role in island society. In 2019, this same team, in collaboration with professionals from different fields and research staff from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, carried out a second excavation campaign inside the volcanic tube and the surrounding exterior area, obtaining highly valuable data. historical value for the aboriginal stage of Fuerteventura. The preliminary results of this renewed project are extremely encouraging and confirm the potential of the Villaverde Cave as one of the most important sites in the Canary Islands. archaeological seeds One of the most important findings of this campaign was the recovery of a good number of archaeological seeds of cultivated plants, as well as collected wild species that were used for food and fuel, among other uses. “This was possible thanks to the carrying out, for the first time in Fuerteventura, of a systematic recovery of the sediments extracted during the excavation, as well as their cleaning with water to extract the plant fossils from the site,” explains Rosa López. The studies carried out by the professor at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Dr. Jacob Morales Mateos, have managed to identify seeds belonging to three cultivated species: barley, wheat and lentils. Along with the seeds, some stone mills have been documented that were probably used in the cooking of these grains and in the preparation of gofio. In order to know the age of the seeds, direct dating was carried out through Carbon 14 analysis of a barley seed and another wheat seed.
